Online 'Search Your Site' Hosts
SearchTools.Com is a guide to using search tools on your website. It allows you to try many of these remote search services and also provides reviews. Also see Alder's search tool comparison (w/examples of each and a complete spreadsheet comparison) and James Huggins refrigerator door, which also has example and a free search services summary.
- Atomz, now part of WebSideStory, basic service (called websidestory express search) is free up to 500 pages. Search statistics, no pdfs in free version, synonym usage, indexing on demand, can exclude parts of the site, multiple sites, separate site segments. But if you exceed free limits the cheapest pay service is $5000.
- Sitelevel (a sevice of whatUseek) is free for 1000 pages; includes PDF, RTF, DOC files - pro version removes ads, starts at $10/month. reindexed weekly or on demand.
- Fusionbot is free for 250 pages and then from $20-200/month. The pay service includes pdfs and allows you to aggregate other sites as a mini-portal. Also included is a site map. Free service updates monthly and has fewer features than most others here.
- Freefind is free w/ads and 32 mb (about 2000 page) limit; no-ad version cost from $5-80/month. Sections excludable, different start points, re-indexed daily, frames indexed, pages ranked, PDFs included, sitemaps included.
- Gigablast has a simple to use and flexible free service. Can use own logo in results. Highly recommended.
- Google now offers sitesearch with its free personalized websearch capability. But indexing cannot be controlled and can be over 30 days. Poor choice for low volume sites.
- Siteminer, from mycomputer.com, is powerful and flexible for $20/month.
- Picosearch is powerful; 1500 pages free, manual re-indexing. You can partition your site for separate search; can create mini-portals of like-sites. Pay versions support pdf and rtf but not free version.
- Master.Com offers powerful site search and other services; message board, polls, calendars. Can search 5000 pages free, most of all free options; includes pdf files, weekly and on demand indexing, indexing shows bad links, can totally customize format.
